Logarithmically, Age 18 is Half Your Life
Mathematically on a calendar, an 18-year-old has completed only 23% of an 80-year lifespan. Logarithmically, however, they have already reached the perceptual midpoint of conscious memory.
Formulated by philosopher Paul Janet in 1897, the Logarithmic Law of Time Perception states that the human mind perceives the duration of a period of time in logarithmic proportion to the total length of life already lived.
Conscious memory forms around age 5. The interval between age 5 and 18 is packed with foundational firsts. In adulthood, familiar routines compress perceived time exponentially.
"A year appears vast to a child because it represents a massive fraction of their total memory bank." — Paul Janet's Logarithmic Law of Time
